Yellow Star Grass - Hypoxis hirsuta (Amaryllis Family, Amaryllidaceae)

It's spring fever. That is what the name of it is. And when you've got it, you want - oh, you don't quite know what it is you do want, but it just fairly makes your heart ache, you want it so!  ~Mark Twain

....or maybe it isn't Yellow Star Grass? I am no botanist nor gardener...
These yellow flowers are so familiar to me, - yet, I do not know their name in English.
Google suggests Yellow Star Grass, based on my "discription".
This flower is all over the cemetery at this time - right by Nidaros Cathedral.

Awake, thou wintry earth - Fling off thy sadness!
Fair vernal flowers, laug forht
Your ancient gladness!
-Thomas Blackburn, "An Easter Hymn"

Crocus...

Crocus Galore

and a former snow drift behind the wood shed .... in May !

Wikipedia tells me that this vibrant and delicate spring flower is a plant of the Crocus genus in the Iridaceae family. It grows wild on the slopes of Greece, former Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Romania and North West Turkey. A species of crocus, the saffron crocus - Crocus sativus, its sigmas are dried and used in cooking and coloring. By weight is the world's most expensive spice and is native to Southwest Asia.
Quite something to ponder in the early morning on my way to work. Or just get blown away by the brilliant colors...

Nothing quite like getting down on your knees to get this perspective; the daffs' point of view as it were. Not much is in focus here, but never the less a refreshing stop hoofing it to work....

Wednesday, May 13

Spring flower joy in danger; the lawn mowers are out. Will this colorful canvas be all gone tomorrow on my way in to work? Green lawns are beautiful, certainly, but nothing compares to this artful, random tapestry of colour, texture and smell in the brilliant sunlight....
